What Exactly is Thermal Imaging for the Home?

We use a special tool called a thermal imaging camera, which detects infrared radiation emitted by objects. Everything with a temperature above absolute zero gives off infrared radiation. Warmer areas typically show up as red or orange, and cooler areas show up as blue or purple. This is a noninvasive way to spot problems that aren't visible to the naked eye or even a standard flashlight during a home inspection. It helps us identify where heat is escaping, where moisture might be hiding, because wet spots are often cooler due to evaporation or where electrical components might be overheating and posing a fire risk.
